Green and Clean
Learn about bioengineered clothing and how it effects our world!

What is bioenginneered clothing?

Like the "stillsuit," featured in the popular movie Dune: bioengineered clothing also known as "wearable technology" is designed to maintain the wearer's temperature even in the most extreme climates. This process uses biodegradable textiles and sustainable materials without the need for factory assembling: taking into account of the socioeconmic impacts. This means that the products worn are eco-friendly materials, organically grown and natural.

Why fast fashion is unacceptabe, No Bueno

Think twice before adding to your cart! Today, over 150 million Americans shopped in stores and online on Thanksgiving weekend in 2022. Events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have increased waste in more ways that just fast fashion. Almost 91% of plastic used to create these products end up in the ocean releasing harmful and toxic chemicals. Although the tradition of shopping on these days are too entrenched in the minds of customers, one thing people can do is to take a different approach. To be mindful of what they need instead of purchasing anything they can get their hands on!

What are the benefits?

-Results in more than 15% energy savings in building HVAC systems and 2% saving in domestic energy usage and GHG emissions if widely implemented. -supports the well-being of individuals and communities -Comfortable, lightweight, and flexible -little waste and reduces the spread of polluition -saves our planet!

How is energy consumption effecting the enviornment?

The emission of air pollutants from fossil fuels is a major cause of air pollution, water pollution, thermal pollution, and climate change. Because more energy must be generated to meet the demands of human resources, more greenhouse gases are released as a result affecting plants, animals, and ecosystems that breathe in the polluted air. "In the United States, about 60% of total electricity generation in 2020 was produced from fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and petroleum), materials that come from plants (biomass), and municipal and industrial wastes. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect. SO2 causes acid rain, which is harmful to plants and to animals that live in water. SO2 also worsens respiratory illnesses and heart diseases, particularly in children and the elderly. NOx contribute to ground-level ozone, which irritates and damages the lungs."

Why I chose this topic

Hello! My name is Perri Koo, and I am a 9th grade student at South Pasadena Highschool. I took an interest in this cause to hopefully spread awareness on sustainable fashion! Growing up my parents worked in the apparel industry and I am indeed calling them out. No piece of clothing is fully sustainable however there are many other alternative ways to improve and restore the damages the industry has caused. Sustainable fashion refers to clothing that is designed and distributed in ways that are enviornmentally friendly. The industry is still evolving and learning how to best evaluate its social and enviormental impacts. My recommendation for you is to strive for perfection NOW not tomorrow or the day after that! Producing and using electricity more efficiently not only reduces the amount of fuel needed to generate electricity but also the number of carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses we produce. Renewable sources such as solar, geothermal, wind, and even bioengineered clothing are all ways that we can reduce our impact.
